Featuring: Noemie and Camille Debray (The SoapGirls, zaf)
Hosted by: BROSIE (music maker, cookie baker)
Noemie and Camille Debray were pop stars as teenagers; they had a record deal with a major label, plenty of hits (written by others), TV appearances, and tours. But the lack of artistic freedom left them increasingly disillusioned, until they finally decided to break away.
In an interview with Jude Benjamin (Camden Live Music Blog), Camille reflected: “We hated it. We were constantly fighting for creative control - it was a damn nightmare. We were stuck there for four years. … If you don’t ultimately believe in what you’re doing, what’s the point?”
The SoapGirls broke free from the stranglehold and took control themselves. Pop turned into punk, external control into self-organization, and a major label deal into a DIY structure.
Since then, they have built an international career outside the mainstream, playing thousands of shows in Europe, the UK, Japan, the US, and South Africa, and are among the most tireless, passionate, and unpredictable punk rock bands of their generation.
Here and now, they’ll tell you their story. The keynote will be hosted by Austrian musician and cookie baker BROSIE.
