It’s 2020, and LGoony is taking a step back. He’s writing songs that aren’t meant for the public. The reasons: the pandemic, a canceled tour, and existential fears stemming from the sudden uncertainty of how an artist can continue to make a living. Added to this is a difficult breakup. He listens to a lot of music during this time—little rap, lots of experimental pop à la Charli XCX, and the entire catalog of the London proto-hyperpop label PC Music. In this chaotic year, the material for “Sad Sad Story” emerges—the project he describes as his first album. The album offers deep insights into his emotional life after the breakup, depicting the different phases between grief, anger, and new hope. The ironic distance is gone, as is the humor; LGoony gets serious and opens up more than ever before—and in doing so, sings more than he raps. It is an artistic reinvention.
